State Superintendent Visits Otay Elementary

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson recently toured Otay Elementary, interacting with students, teachers and administrators about the school’s success in accelerating the achievement of English Learners. Otay has the highest percentage of English Learners among the District’s 45 schools. Torlakson, who was in San Diego for a conference, selected Otay to visit because of the school’s work with English Learners. The school met all of its federal Title III achievement goals.

Principal Rosario Villareal hosted the tour. “It was an honor to host the State Superintendent at Otay Elementary,” Villareal said. “He took many opportunities to talk to students about their own learning, and students responded in a very candid manner about the purpose and objective of their lessons.” Superintendent Torlakson noted CVESD’s partnership with Imagine Learning English, a computer-based program that helps accelerate language development and literacy of English Learner students. The State Superintendent was impressed with the classroom environment, the explicit direct instruction, the productive group work, and how the students were so focused on the learning even as they were being visited, said CVESD’s Emma Sanchez, executive director of Language Acquisition Development Services and Support.
