Student Speakers Challenge Us to Make a Positive Impact

They informed us, educated us, and entertained us. Most importantly, they challenged us to help them make our community, our country, even our world a better place. A record number of students participated in the District’s 2012 Speech Contest, sponsored by the Chula Vista Rotary Club. Many adults might break out in sweaty palms, butterflies and cold sweats in addressing a live audience. However, these CVESD students nailed their speeches on the following topics: 4th Grade – How will you positively impact your school community? 5th Grade – How will you positively impact your country? 6th Grade – How will you positively impact your world?

Miguel Aldrete (Discovery Charter) took first in the sixth grade competition, Liam Galleher (Chula Vista Learning Community Charter) was the fifth grade winner, and Brenna Pangelinan (Olympic View) was the fourth grade winner. The finals took place February 27, pitting six competitors at each grade level who had emerged from the District semi-finals.

“From start to finish every one of these students did a tremendous job on their speeches,” said contest judge Michael Minjares, who is editor of My Hometown Magazine and a motivational speaker. “The students’ ideas for making a positive difference, and in some cases what they’ve already done, gave all of us in the room confidence that the future is in good hands.”

The grade level winners presented their winning speeches at the March 6 Board of Education meeting. [Note: We updated the slideshow to include photos from the Board meeting.]
