County Honors CVESD as a Public Health ‘Champion’

The District was among 16 individuals, organizations and government agencies recently honored by the County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) at the 11th annual Public Health Champion Awards ceremony. The Public Health Champion Awards are a component of the Live Well, San Diego! initiative, the County’s 10-year plan to improve the health and safety of local residents and communities.

“These organizations and individuals are working hard to make our communities safer and healthier,” said Chairman Ron Roberts, County Board of Supervisors. “San Diego County is well-known for its collaborative efforts and these partners are proof of that.”

The awards reflect achievements related to the 2012 National Public Health Week theme: A Healthier America Begins Today. Join the Movement!

CVESD’s accomplishments include implementing the Healthy Eating Active Communities program, which aims to reduce childhood obesity; mentoring other school districts to develop school wellness policies; and partnering with WalkSan Diego to provide Safe Routes to School workshops to students, school staff and parents. In January 2011, CVESD staff presented the results of a landmark Height & Weight Surveillance Project with the county that measured more than 25,000 students. The results revealed that almost 40% of K-6th grade students are at an unhealthy weight (overweight and/or obese) for their age and gender. In October 2011, CVESD staff presented “Growing Healthy Children: Next Steps”: an hour-long presentation to parents that addressed and modeled systemic “next steps” and how they are being implemented at the district, school and/or classroom levels.

“We’ve made a great deal of progress on multiple fronts, but we also recognize the alarming rates of juvenile obesity and juvenile diabetes were years in the making,” said CVESD Superintendent Francisco Escobedo, Ed.D. “We are proud of our accomplishments to date. We have a lot of work ahead of us still. It will take continued collaboration with the county, the community, students, staff and parents to make a difference.”
