Olympic View Elementary School officially welcomed back its students and their families with a barbeque and fair hosted by the school’s OPTC (Olympic View Parent Teachers Club) under the leadership of Joseph Roley-Arzaga, President, on Friday August 24th at the school’s Eastlake campus. The event, attended by hundreds from the school and local community, offered not only food and refreshment, but a host of community participants providing information and resources to Olympic View families, as well as games and activities for children.

A highlight of the event was the signing of a partnership agreement between the school and the Navy’s Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit 5. The unit, which is the Navy’s center for industrial health and medicine, will work with students to teach them the practical side of science as a compliment to their formal studies. “We’re very excited to have this partnership,” commented Olympic View Principal Gloria McKearney. “These sailors and scientists are terrific role models for our students and can help them understand the importance of science and technology in today’s world. We’re thrilled to have them be part of our school family.”

The Eastlake Educational Foundation (EEF) also signed a partnership agreement with the school. EEF supports all six Eastlake schools with technology grants. Olympic View received $20,000 from EEF for technology this year.

Local businesses, non-profits, and community organizations set up booths and provided information on local resources to families. For entertainment, Mr. Joe DeMers, director of the Eastlake High School Choir brought two of his choral groups to entertain the Olympic View families. Students and parents danced to DJ Jack Villar and got a chance to try out their Zumba moves withlocal instructor Yuko Saito.

Participating in the formal ceremonies with Navy and school leaders were Chula Vista Elementary School District Board Member Larry Cunningham along with Superintendent Dr. Francisco Escobedo and Executive Director Nancy Kerwin.

The barbeque was the first major community event of the year for the school, which uses social events like this to bring the community together in support of the school’s mission to educate children.
