Spelling B-E-E has Students Buzzing with Pride

Students from Hazel Goes Cook, Halecrest, Olympic View, Salt Creek and Enrique S. Camarena elementary schools squared off in an epic spelling competition for grades K-6 at Casillas Elementary on a recent Saturday. This event has doubled in size over the years and contest organizers intend to involve up to 10 schools next year.

Several members and businesses in our local community pitched in to sponsor this educational but competitive event. Local businesses that contributed include: Atlantis Laser Tag, Boomers, Fun 4 All, G-Fash and Copeland Engraving. Attendees included Superintendent Francisco Escobedo, Ed.D., who acted as head judge, and Kenneth Collard, District Special Education Coordinator.

Numerous teachers and principals were present and proud of their students. Organizers said the event was a success, and plans are for a larger event next year.

“We are definitely on the right track to making this a district wide event within the next three to five years” says Gwen Bates, spelling bee chairman.
